Do You Need to Seal Brick Pavers?

Although naturally resistant, brick pavers are still prone to eventual damages from outside conditions. That’s not really up to us; even under the right care, your project is going to feel the passage of time. That’s the reason why sealers were invented – whatever slows down this process surely is something homeowners might be interested in. However, many are doubtful on whether sealing your pavers is an essential step, so we’re here to answer that question.

To find out if you need to seal your brick pavers or not, keep reading the article or click here to be directed to our paver sealing guide.

Why do people seal their pavers?

In short, people seal their pavers so that they can last longer. Sealing is quite a straightforward process that gives your floor an extra coat for protection. People can apply sealers on their own, which can be a tricky job for beginners, or contract experts who offer professional assistance.

On the other hand, some prefer not to seal them whatsoever. In spite of all the benefits that sealing can bring, your project does not require, in theory, any kind of extra measures to be a complete and functional investment. Think about it like buying a screen protector for your brand new phone.

Some upsides of sealing include:

  • enhances brightness
  • offers protection
  • improves the drainage around your installation

Some downsides of sealing include:

  • requires maintenance
  • is not very cheap
  • can contaminate nearby vegetation

What happens if I don’t seal my brick pavers?

Well, not sealing your pavers is unordinary nowadays, but definitely fine.

The main problem you’ll have to face is the constant cleaning – especially after heavy storms – because several stains and residue will be a common occurrence. Not only that, but small weeds will start growing in between the paver joints. That happens when the wind deposits seeds into the humid gaps, and you know the rest.

Keep in mind that sunken pavers are not caused by sealing or lack thereof. In fact, this issue is something completely natural even after the perfect installation. You may read more on how to fix it here.

Should I seal my pavers, then?

The short answer is: it depends on how much effort and budget you are willing to spend.

If you’d like to have your bricks look as new as on the day you installed them, yes. That will also skyrocket your curb appeal and home-reselling value. But if you really don’t want to undergo extra measures to secure the brightness of your project, just leave it as it is. Make sure to keep an eye out for faulty and dirty spots sometime down the line and you’re going to be ok.
