How to Replace Brick Pavers

We’ve seen before that acquiring brick pavers for any project is a very good investment. With the best cost-benefit on the market, they provide a beautiful and durable surface that can hold loads of weight and traffic. However, eventually they will become unleveled, faded or broken due to natural pressure, which are problems you can both avoid and fix quite easily. So how to replace brick pavers, you might ask?

Well, keep reading the article to find out how to deal with faulty pavers. Or, in case you need a full guide on leveling out your floor the right way, click here.

So, when do I need to replace my brick pavers?

As mentioned above, there will come a time when your project requires some maintenance. That may come in many forms, like a routine cleanup, but the need to replace single units is the reason why you’re here. Maybe some of them have lost their color, maybe one or two got disjointed by a flood, maybe the upper part of your driveway could no longer hold your heavy wheels, etc. One way or another, the solution is very straightforward.

Tips and tools

First of all, you need to get yourself a tool to remove the unwanted bricks without damaging the others. We’ve listed below some good candidates for this job:

  • two flathead screwdrivers
  • two putty knives
  • a paver puller

Whether you prefer the help from a professional or not, you should buy the amount of pavers needed. We recommend you get a little bit more than the ones you’ll end up replacing. There are two reasons for that:

  • You won’t need to worry about hunting down new pavers for future replacements. It’s always nice to have a backup for emergencies.
  • You never know when your model of brick might be out of supply. In that case, your project will get spoiled by different styles of pavers.

Step-by-step to replace brick pavers

Step One: Place the edges of your tools on each side of the brick you want to remove. In a careful motion, push the screwdrivers or putty knives outwards to pry it up, then grab the brick once you’re able to. Of course, if you’re using a paver puller this process will be much simpler.

Step Two: After removal, line up the new paver with the edges of its neighbor. Push the brick until it makes a “click” sound upon lying on the spot of the removed brick. Gently drop the paver – and make sure it’s not loose.

Step Three: Repeat the previous steps until you’ve refilled your whole project. Keep in mind that forcing a paver inwards or scraping its edges against the others might cause a sunken floor with deep voids and large hills. In any case, getting assistance is never a bad idea, especially for beginners!
